OBERKALBACH AREA EMIGRANTS TO RUSSIA

On 25 July 1763,  Catherine II of Russia issued a manifesto inviting all foreigners  to come to the Russian Empire to settle on its vast extent of lands .  Her manifesto promised free transportation to the  area of settlement, 60 dessiatines (162 acres) of free land per family, exemption of tax payments for 10 years, freedom of religion, advance loan for daily provisions, construction and necessary animals and equipment for an entire year, and no required military or civil  service. They had the freedom to leave the country if they wanted, conditioned upon first repaying the money loaned to them.  They were permitted to establish factories, engage in any kind of trade,  become a member of a guild or  corporation,  and   sell their products anywhere within the realm. Some Oberkalbach area residents  took advantage of these  offers and left Germany in 1766 to settle in the region of the lower Volga River.  The following is  a list of some of these and the villages from which they left.
